Schiele Museum of Natural History Buffalo Nation

Fee: $3 adults / $2 students and seniors plus museum admission.
In a span of less than 200 years, the great Horse Culture of the Plains Indians developed and flourished before the settlement of the West. Explore the culture and history of the Great Plains tribes through original art, authentic Plains Indian clothing, and other artifacts. Replicated scenes depict a decorated family tipi in a Plains Indian camp and a buffalo hunt on the open plain.

Costumed interpreters will present various aspects of life in the 18th and 19th centuries, with themes changing each week Call ahead to verify scheduled activities. Regular Admission
    James K. Polk State Historic Site Flags Across the Nations exhibit, through December 31
Winning photographs and chalk drawings of scenes that evoke American patriotism are the focus of two art exhibits currently on display at the site in. “Images of Patriotism” features photos from the “I Love America Day Photo Day Contest, 2007” while the focus of “Chalk It Up for Freedom” is children’s art and photos. (The images in this exhibit are the handiwork of students from Elizabeth Lane Elementary in Matthews.) The exhibits are sponsored by Flags Across The Nation, a Charlotte nonprofit that works to promote patriotism through the arts.
  Gaston County Museum Pieces of Our Past: Stitched Memories through Jan. 12, 2008
running until January 12, 2008 at the Gaston County Museum is Pieces of Our Past: Stitched Memories. The exhibit will explore the history and celebrate the heritage of quilt making in this country and particularly our region. In addition to nine quilts from the Museum’s collection, the exhibit will contain objects featuring quilted construction and detailing as well as sewing equipment. Some of these objects include slippers, jackets, and hats, sewing machines, and sewing kits.

October 27 (Saturday) — Charlotte Museum of HistoryHaunted Homesite
6 p.m. - 9 p.m.; Bring the family for an evening at the Museum that will include a ghost tour of the Homesite, cookie decorating, and fall craft activities in the Museum. Limited space available, reservations required.
R.S.V.P. Required; $5 members, $7 non-members, all ages.

October 27 - 28 (Saturday & Sunday) Historic Brattonsville Civil War Reenactment
Saturday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.; Sunday 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Cost: $8 Adults, $6 Seniors, $3 Students, 4 and under Free
CHM Members: $5 Adults/Seniors, $3 Students, free for children 4 and under.
This Civil War reenactment brings to life the war that ravaged America . Activities include battle reenactments, cannon firing demonstrations, camp life activities, historic music, firearms presentations and children's military drills. Shopping and family friendly foods will be available. Battle reenactment will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

  November 1 (Wednesday) November 1 (Wednesday) — Gaston County Museum Coffee with the Curator 
Please join us for our monthly Coffee with the Curator program, from 10:30 AM till 11:30 AM.  During this program, Curator, Aimee Russell
will identify objects and provide preservation assistance on pieces brought to the museum by visitors.  If objects are too large please bring photographs. During this program, object donations to the museum will also be considered. There is no appointment needed for this program and it is free and open to the public.


November 10 (Saturday)

November 10 (Saturday ) Andrew Jackson State Park Life in the Waxhaws
Join us for a candlelight tour and catch a glimpse of early settlers living in the Waxhaws. Experience 18th century daily life, similar to Andrew Jackson's boyhood experince, and see the events that shaped the community as you step back in time. Designed for all ages. Children aged 12 and younger should be accompanied by an adult. Tours begin every 30 minutes from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

November 17 (Saturday) — Charlotte Museum of HistoryCivil War Lantern Tour
6 p.m. - 10 p.m.; Join the excitement as you take a walk back in time and relive the Civil War, as you take an in-depth look into the conditions, hopes, and fears that common foot soldiers of the Civil War lived with. As you progress through different camp settings on the grounds of the Homesite, you will see the campfires, smell the cooking, and listen to the stories from the period.
R.S.V.P. Required; $8 adults, $6 students/seniors, $4 children.
